Editors' Note

Bodaki Crossing: Journal of Literature and Art is a response to the need felt by many of us to share creative work, across disciplines, open to everyone at Shiv Nadar University.

The name Bodaki Crossing is resonant of the place we’ve come to inhabit. Our road winds past fields and twists through villages, punctuated by that railway crossing that can be anything from a comma to a semi-colon to a period, signaling the end of one story and the beginning of another. So, for our first issue, the theme is ‘Place’ - as the site of emotional connections, of the rootedness of a future or a past in space, of that somewhere we always are, even while wishing we were somewhere else. We wanted meditations on movement, on stillness, on searching, on finding our place in words and images. We wanted submissions that defied categorization and that’s what we received, so much so that we had to keep our own categories open-ended enough to contain them: Prose, Poetry, Images. Since Bodaki Crossing exists in cyberspace, not confined within the linear structure of the printed journal, it’s up to you to find your way around.

All around, buildings that didn’t exist are getting names. Streets are getting signboards. Newly planted trees mark the passing of time with flowers. The disorientation of space, where one point is like any other, is yielding to the singularity of place. Each writer, artist, poet featured in this issue reminds us to pay attention to where we are.

It is our great pleasure to invite you to pause, as we do at the railway crossing each morning, and read through our inaugural edition. We know the journey will be as rewarding for you as it has been for us, in putting it together.
